Revving up to preview Round 18 – the Abu Dhabi GP

As the sun begins to set on the 2012 F1 season, TOM WILKINSON previews this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Will Alonso be able to stop Vettel? It's all to play for in the last races of 2012.

After the spice and excitement of India, Formula 1 heads to Abu Dhabi for Round 18 of the 2012 championship. As the sun sets on this fabulous circuit, the lights will shine brightly, but who will sparkle on the top step of the podium?
The Formula 1 season is nearing its end for 2012, The championship, however, is still in close contention. Alonso and Vettel are fighting for the top spot, but there are plenty of championship battles further down the field. It’s been a very exciting season this year and it looks set to remain spicy until the chequered flag in Brazil.
Heading into this weekend it has been officially announced from Sauber that Nico Hulkenberg will be joining the Swiss team next season. Nico confirmed this news after the Japanese Grand Prix, but this is now confirmation from the team.  They are expected to announce Estiban Guterez to partner Nico.  Nico insists his move to Sauber is in no way linked to an eventual move to Ferrari, however he has admitted being in contact with the Scuderia. This is an interesting story, I think he will join the Italian team eventually.
Team Lotus have shelved the double DRS they had planned to introduce this season. Technical Director James Allison has confirmed the team are unlikely to race it before the end of the 2012 season. It is a complex system which the team have struggled to understand completely. Toro Rosso have confirmed that 2013 driver line-up will remain unchanged. Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne will stay at the Italian team after successful performances this year.
This weekend’s race in Abu Dhabi should be a real thriller. This great circuit provides plenty of action, it’s certainly a great spectacle with the sun setting in the background.
